The New York Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) established the Traffic Violations Bureau to handle the massive number of traffic tickets in NYC. New York City writes over one million traffic tickets each year. That covers just about everything between riding a bicycle in the wrong lane and reckless driving.
If you commit any non-criminal moving violation in northern Brooklyn, you can receive a TVB ticket. But the TVB does not handle any parking and camera violations. The Department of Transportation and the Department of Motor Vehicles handle those tickets.
Did you know that New York state police officers issue more than 700,000 speeding tickets each year? In upstate New York alone, those tickets helped the government rake in over $171 million. To protect your wallet and your license, you’ll need to do everything you can to fight NYC traffic tickets.
This guide is a helpful rule of thumb when it comes to the TVB:
For general information on the Brooklyn North TVB, call (718) 488-5710. That is the phone number for a call center that services the entire Traffic Violation’s Bureau. The operators can direct you to specific departments, provide basic information, and much more. They work from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on weekdays and take most holidays off.
There are eight NYC TVB locations. When you get a traffic ticket in Brooklyn, check the section in the bottom left corner. That’s where the ticket should list the court’s address. Make sure that the address is exactly as follows:
Atlantic Center Mall
2nd Floor
625 Atlantic Avenue
Brooklyn, NY 11217
If that is not the address listed on your ticket, contact the call center to double check the correct address. Here is a satellite view of the Brooklyn North TVB location. It is located right next to Atlantic Avenue Barclays Center Station.
So many tips and so little time! The first thing that comes to mind is attire. Make sure that you dress appropriately for court. That means business formal. Examples are a suit and tie, a professional dress, or your “Sunday best.”
Another helpful tip is to pay special attention to the information on your traffic ticket. Simple errors like the officer writing down the wrong color of your car won’t always result in a dismissal. But glaring errors like the wrong license plate number or the wrong person’s name might! If you’ve lost your traffic ticket, you can use WinIt’s traffic ticket lookup tool to find it.
Most importantly, hire an expert traffic lawyer to help you win your case. You can do so at the press of a button with the WinIt app or by contacting WinIt directly. Still have questions? Comment them below and our NYC traffic lawyers will answer as soon as possible!
